I’ve always loved Gospel music. At least, I feel like I have. Gospel music feels like the original soul music, the songs that erupt from deep, deep down. I love all the clapping and swaying. I love that Gospel music won’t let you stand there pouting with your arms crossed – it wants your whole body involved.
I should’ve featured it before, but it wasn’t showing up in the usual places I look for new music. So I missed it, until last week when our most recent #NewMusicMonday feature, Cloverton, hit the Top 10 on iTunes in Christian and Gospel. I started looking at other up and coming artists in the genre and happily rediscovered the sound.
So without further ado, let me introduce Donald Lawrence and the Tri-City Singers with Encourage Yourself. This song is a classic Gospel song, sung not to God but to the people of God, a giant proclamation that we have to speak truth and life to ourselves, even when we’re down and discouraged. (This is speaking to me right now because I’ve been really worn down with quite a few things going on in life, and I’ve just letting the bummers infect me. I need to shake it off and encourage myself.)
